Did oil start falling rapidly when the Soviet Union collapsed?

I have heard it did but I am not sure.

Also, if that is true, then the end of the Soviet Union and the state of America today are amazingly similar unfortunately, being bogged down in a war in Afghanistan and having the oil prices going down.Did oil start falling rapidly when the Soviet Union collapsed?
No. OPEC unravelled for a while and the global market was glutted around 1986, years before the fall. Gas was as low as 59 cents a gallon in some places until OPEC got back together.

However, you are correct on the parallel of Afghanistan. The Jihadists, who gave birth to bin Laden, bled the USSR dry once we gave them shoulder-fired Stinger missiles. They are doing the same to the U.S. now. Bin Laden wants us to stay. That's why he's for McCain.

Yes, the disarray of OPEC caused a steep drop in oil and gasoline prices, which caused the U.S. to suffer. Remember, we produce a lot of oil here too, and people lost jobs stateside in the oil industry.
